Märchen Forest: Mylne and the Forest Gift is a 3D role-playing video game wherein you get to explore a mysterious forest full of wonders. Developed by PrimaryOrbit, this free-roam adventure game takes you on a two-part magical journey as a young apothecary who’s curious about her home and the creatures that inhabit it. This is the legacy version of Märchen Forest so expect the 3D visuals to be of lower quality.

Various secrets to unlock

The story of Märchen Forest: Mylne and the Forest Gift revolves around Mylne, the granddaughter of a master apothecary. Being so young, she has yet to fully explore the magical forest her home is in but all of a sudden, her grandfather tasks her with retrieving ingredients for a potion on one fateful day. There are no clear indicators on where to go so she’s free to explore and discover more of the Märchen Forest.

At the start, this game plays out with easy exploration gameplay in a straightforward manner. You won’t be guided much, as this is to encourage you to roam freely and puzzle out how to gather the necessary ingredients. Aside from this, you can interact with other characters who may give you hints or give you access to minigames. You can also do fishing and try to complete all caught fish and potions created.

However, this is just Act I. If you restart the game after watching the ending, you’ll unlock the action-packed Act II—which is an entirely different game. Titled “Mylne and the Strange Cavern”, the gameplay now becomes a dungeon crawler JRPG wherein you’ll encounter strange monsters and deadly traps. The character sprite portraits are gorgeous despite the bland 3D models so the graphics are fine. Unfortunately, things can get confusing due to the game’s lack of clear hints.

Not bad for a legacy version

As the original version of this series, Märchen Forest: Mylne and the Forest Gift isn’t too bad since the revamped Märchen Forest mostly improved its visuals and gave it a full voiceover treatment. It’s enjoyable enough thanks to the interesting mix of relaxing exploration and serious combat. Plus, it can be played with a supported controller. Those who liked the style of the Atelier video game series will at least find this a cute game.
